No cash changing hands. Yandy has been the 7th best bat over the last 4 years, while rarely missing time. 2 years at $12M each (one's even an option!!!) is worth 4 times what he's valued at. If teams wanted a worse bat with similar defense, they could have signed Pete Alonso.

I can't see the Marlins agreeing to this. They aren't exactly in WS mode yet.

This was mostly posted to highlight how many pretty good teams could benefit from 2 years of Yandy Diaz. Even teams that are still building would benefit from a 2-4 WAR DH/1B. If Yandy Diaz was truly worth only 7 mil excess, he would be on mlbtr daily becuase 28 different teams would be tripling that number to acquire him. The Dodgers wouldn't want him, but that's it. Everything is negotiable, and I think the Marlins are closer to WS mode than the Rays. The Rays signed Matz, Martinez, Mullins, Fraley, and (traded for) Lux for the sole purpose of trading them when the time is right. Mullins is toast, and in danger of being DFA'd at any point. I love leading the Yankees in the division, but sadly, this is one of those years where we have to play another 145 games. I said years ago Taylor Walls would get MVP votes if he gets to a .330 BABIP. I got laughed at, but I stand by it. Is this the year? Possibly, but if it is, he's probably traded. LaBellaVita at DraysBay (whose opinion I respect about as much as yours) says a midseason'deadline pickup has no bearing on that team's future success. Although I disagree with that, as Zobrist could easily be a 2 time WS MVP while wearing a new uniform, that theory has to go both ways, right? If adding Yandy at the deadline has no meaningful benefit, then the shaqthagoreum theorum states the inverse is true as well, and trading Yandy has no meaningful detriment to the likelihood of post-trade success? Maybe? Anyways, if trading for good players doesn't impact post season success, then trading away good players in years where the post season is not likely, has little effect on postseason chances. That much I understand. 10% minus 5% leaves you with effectively the same chance you had as before, only now you've increased future chances. The second a good offer (30M future value) comes for Yandy, I'm okay making the move. Thoughts?

I see it much the same way in the big picture (ie: Rays aren’t a playoff team and will be trading away a lot of players at the Deadline). I didn’t understand the Rays offseason to be honest. Signing more consistent and proven players like Lux, Fraley and Mullins might help the on field results a bit, but they are all low-ceiling, 1ish fWAR players at best and they have no control after this season, which means they will have little to no trade value at the Deadline. On the other hand, guys like J.Lowe were traded and guys like Palacios were ticketed for Durham. In a world where both are healthy all year, it’s quite possible both have good seasons and much more trade value at the Deadline because of their years of control. Anyway, besides Yandy, I don’t expect the position players to net much or anything in trade returns at the Deadline, unless they pull a shocker because of next year’s lockout and trade Simpson or Cammy. On the other hand, I’m expecting the Rays to trade several pitchers at the Deadline and get really good returns. Anyone not controlled through 2028 should be on the market. On LBV’s theory, I’m with you. I respect the man and value his thoughts but I think he’s barking that trade deadline moves have no value. Hell, in the past 8 years the WS MVP was a trade acquisition pick up twice (Soler and Pearce) and teams like the Rangers and Cubs probably wouldn’t have won without trading for Montgomery and Chapman respectively.

Ben Zobrist won the World Series MVP in 2016 as a new member of the Cubs. The year before, he won the Series with the Royals. A midseason pickup, he batted .261/.346/.435 in the World Series. The Royals probably don't win the Series without him. Like you, I disagree with LBV's premise.
