Ah, the Nelson Cruz trade. How I loved it when it was announced. I still don’t fault the RFO for that trade. They had a great team that year that needed some veteran leadership and a power bat. Oh well…. As for the value of the trade, correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t the value of the players given up only around $20 MM at the time? It was an overpay for sure, partly because the trade went down a month before the trade deadline, but I don’t recall it being anywhere close to $50MM. Ryan was only viewed as a mid-rotation arm at the time.
I'd have to look it up, but yeah, that sounds about right.
