Mayer has had a disappointing year so far, but is only 23 years old and still holds tremendous value as a former #4 overall pick. That said, the Red Sox have the #3 prospect in the MLB coming up to play SS next year. This makes Mayer expendable. Bleis makes the trade value an exact match, but I added Witherspoon as sweetener to move the needle and entice Padres to move on from their franchise player. Red Sox can then move Duran or Abreu to recoup some of the farm system they are giving up in this deal.
