Well I'll use the same analogy again, SF calls TB and says they want Aranda and they won't give up nothing but fair value, I guess TB has to trade him then? Same situation, SF doesn't have to trade Schmitt cause he's good, cheap, and controllable and very valuable to their club so what is their incentive to not only trade him for fair value but pick TB over the other 20 teams that would pay a higher price? Having Schmitt at 2B for several seasons is worth a lot so you have to pay a lot or else you get stuck with someone that is just league average or worse i.e. look how the Lux deal turned out
SF doesn't have to trade Schmitt, but unless they are planning to extend him, they would best be served by trading him this year before the potential lockout and further loss of control. So there is incentive to trade Schmitt, which probably suggests an underpay is more likely than an overpay. There are only so many teams that will be interested in Schmitt as is (ie: playoff teams with a hole he can fill).
Haha he's batting .283/ .313/ .509/ .823 with 15 HRs in a large ballpark, he can cover 7 positions, he has 3.5 yrs worth of cheap control left, he's basically not far off from JC, you think he's overvalued?? Lockout or not putting him at 2B on the Rays right now makes a huge impact especially when he's making less than $1M, the 2-6 Diaz, Aranda, Caminero, and Schmitt, that's 120 HRs, I have no problem overpaying especially since TB can't graduate prospects anyhow
He’s having a career year. That does not put him in JC’s category though. And I didn’t say he was undervalued. I said he might be had for an underpay. Totally different concepts. Anyway, I said at the start I’d be good with an overpay, so if the Rays can get him for Brito and Kinney, I say have at it.
