East and possibly the best team in the A.L. and the Tigers are sliding fast and make a tough decision but come away with a very nice package of prospects from a surprisingly aggressive Rays team who also send the Tigers a PTBNL. 🤔
Not a chance. The Rays best arm and bat for a rental, and with Gillen being a top 10 prospect, to say nothing of T.Johnson? The Rays would never agree to such a huge overpay. Are you kidding??? By the way, do you have any idea how silly T.Johnson’s valuation is? In a recent Q&A, Baseball America recently answered a question about how soon we might see Johnson called up by saying something like “He’s not close. The Rays continue to treat him like a starting pitcher and they won’t call him up until he logs significant time in the minors as a reliever.” Talk about an asinine, narrow-minded, beyond pig-headed view of T.Johnson. All he has done is dominate AAA bats this year going 2-3 TTO each start, just like he did against AA last year and the low minors before. He’s going to start for the Rays and his valuation should reflect him starting not just as another common reliever. He’s certainly not getting traded for $2.6 million.
I agree with your sentiments on Ty Johnson but think the addition of Skubal could win it all for the Rays in ‘26 and the price should be paid if the Tigers make Skubal available in the scenario I’ve proposed here.
Rays need a lot more than Skubal though. Their Pen is bottom third in the League. While we hope internal improvements are coming, the Rays may need to trade for a couple arms for the Pen. Then there’s the offense, which is basically 3 all-star caliber bats (Diaz, Aranda and Cammy) and a bunch of others (who have had hot and cold spells all season, and we hope all get hot in the playoffs).
