💁🏼♀️ It’s a decent offer, but I would pass. 👎 I think if the cash was reduced to $2.5m the Red Sox might consider it, but I still wouldn’t.💰 Here’s my thinking on it; There is about $9m left on Contreras salary for this year, $4m paid by the Cardinals, that leaves $5m for the ‘26 season. His salary in ‘27 is $17m with the Cardinals paying another $4m leaving $13m. And the club has a $20m club option for the ‘28 season (age 36, no buyout). So if you pass on the option he’s owed approximately $18m for the rest of this year and next year (which I believe will be a lockout/walkout shortened season, so potentially owed even less). Those numbers represent a very nice bargain for the middle of the order RH bat that is in such high demand and not much available.
Being honest i don't think 2.5 MM should be the factor if the Redsox are getting a package like this. Plus they've already invested in this team and agreed to the payroll. In fact, I think they should be willing to eat as much money as they can, so they can maximize the returns they acquire.
Eating money to maximize a return doesn’t necessarily mean a prospect that a team has no interest in moving suddenly becomes available, it only means it will include more of the “edge of the roster” or “lottery types” in the trade package (like you’re doing with Levi Sterling & Khristian Curtis).
After reviewing your initial comment, i agree with you. I wasn't taking into consideration Contreras contract details.
Need someone who is willing to take a deep dive into researching his contract details better then I have because it could be different then what I’ve described but I think I’m close with the numbers.
