I don't love 5 years of Crochet at around $20MM per year given his injury history. He's a good pitcher when healthy, so I see the appeal, but I don't think the risk/reward is there.
20M is so cheap for a CY candidate though. He's better than McClan or Rasmussen when all are healthy. Would you give those guys $20 per year? I would for sure. There's no doubt there's risk, but there's risk giving Matz 7.5 per year too. The new ownership needs to go for it.
I don't know if he's better than Ras and McClanny if everyone is pitching to their best, but in regards to whether I'd give any of them $100 million over 5 years, the answer is hell no if I ran the Rays and hell yes if I ran the Dodgers. The Rays can't afford to take a $100 million risk on 2-3X major elbow surgery pitchers. The next time Ras blows out his arm might end his career. Same with McClanny. I don't know enough about Crochet's injury history to say his career could end, but he's still a risky bet healthwise.
He's owed $200M and can't stay healthy (currently on IL due to shoulder problems), so there's more to the story than you're telling. It's 2 top 100 prospects plus a 5 years of a guy capable of winning a batting title and stealing 70 bags.
