I see what you’re doing here and I generally like it. I’m not a fan of trading Flewelling to get rid of Matz though.
My thoughts were they'd want one of our big 3 C, and I think the Rays would want to move Flewelling rather than the best hitter of the 3 (Gray), and the best future of the 3 (Bodine in my opinion). So Matz is just kind of a throw in to get him off the roster. The Padres can frame it as 2 MLBers coming back if they want to gaslisght their fans. I want the Rays to make a big splash, because in my opinion, this is not a good baseball team, but somehow are almost 20 games over .500. Caminero, Diaz, Aranda, Mesa and a bunch of replacement players make up our lineup. I love our starting rotation, but in a 3 game series, one bad inning out of a P ruins the season. In the post season, teams will bring in their best RHP to get through our top 3, and then let a scrub get Walls, Williamson, Foretes, Mullins, Simpson, Palacios out. We have to figure out how to bump a couple guys down the lineup, and 2b/OF/C are the biggest offenders. I can almost guarantee Simpson gets traded, because Mesa is a stud and we didn't trade BLowe and Monty to let Melton patrol Durham's OF all year. Mesa is really exciting for me, and all of Mesa, Simpson, and Melton are LH batters. Mullins is atrocious, so my hope is Melton looks good in CF when he gets the call and then Mullins gets a DFA.
Gray is a 1B/DH. Rays aren’t playing him at catcher. If I’m the RFO, Flew and Bodine are both on No Trade Lists. Rays have an opportunity to fix the catcher position and they’d better not blow it. As for this year’s team, I share a lot of your concerns. This team has too many holes in the Pen and the lineup to be seen as a heavyweight in the playoffs, and Jax and McClanny might need to be shut down come Sept/Oct. if the Rays choose to go for it, they’d better bring in 1 SP, 1-2 relievers and 1-2 at C, 2B and COF. Half assing the trade deadline won’t get it done. That said, they are a sure thing to make the playoffs and a 50-50 bet to secure a first round bye as the best team in the AL. With the way they play at home, having a 1st round bye and home field advantage could make for an easy road to the WS.
I’m a fan of both Simpson and Mesa and want no part of Fraley retuning to the active roster. Mullins has played a lot better since the opening months but he could be traded to open a spot for Melton. I don’t see that happening but it’s possible. Ultimately, I expect Mesa, Melton and Simpson to be the lefty outfielders on next year’s team, but I don’t know who gets playing time this year.
