Not sure how I feel about this, but I think I like the idea. The Rays have 3 All Star caliber starting pitchers, and Jax is an excellent #4. In a 5 and 7 game series, you need 3 SP. Skubal, McClan, Rasmussen, Martinez is overkill. So pick one of Ras and McClan and upgrade them. I love McClan, but Ras and Skubal are better, at least right now. Operating off the theory that the 2027 season doesn't happen, both Rasmussen and McClan are in their final year of team control right now. So the Tigers bet that 2027 happens, because if it does, they win this trade. If it doesn't, they still shed 15M of salary.
If the Tigers sell and the Rays need to shut down McClanny because of an innings limit after not pitching for more than 2 years, then I think I like this trade a lot. Rays would still have Ras, Pepiot, Jax, Seymour, Martinez (if they pick up his option, which is doubtful), Matz (unfortunately), and prospects like T.Johnson, J.Boyle, B.Hopkins, M.Forret and others for next year (and future years). If McClanny can pitch through October and the price tag on Skubal is extreme, I'd rather see the Rays keep McClanny and pursue Mize at the deadline.
