I'm good with the trade targets. Seems a bit of an overpay, but maybe that's fine. Rays are ruining A.Smith and his career won't survive their "development". They need to set him free.
I get it, I'm just trying to be as realistic as possible in these proposals. I'd love to trade some 26 year old in A+, but I think there's only a handful of relievers on the market worth having, and they won't come cheap. Of the obvious sellers, the Rockies and Mets have nobody to sell. The Royals, Angels, Reds, Giants and A's are the only clear sellers, and I'm not sure the A's or Giants will come to that conclusion. There really aren't many relievers worth trading for on those teams. If I'm the Angels, I'm saying "give me a fair trade offer, now triple it, cause there's 23 teams that want better relievers, and only 8-10 relievers on the market." I loved Aidan Smith, thought he was a better prospect than Carson Williams 2 years ago, but he's draft eligible in a year, and currently has a 50 wRC+ in his 2nd go around in A+. He has essentially zero value in my mind, but his ceiling as a 21 year old good CF with tons of power should get the angels to relent. His ceiling is BJ Upton, but his floor is....yikes, I hope this is his floor.
I would say the following teams are definitely selling - A's, Royals, Angels, Reds, Giants, Mets and Rockies. The Padres, Blue Jays and Red Sox probably should be sellers given their run differential. That's a third of the league right there. I'm not buying "it's a seller's market" until we get closer to the trade deadline.
Have the Angels ever sold? I think the Giants would love to rid themselves of huge contracts, but I don't see them moving anyone of talent that isn't $50M in the hole or Luis Arraez. I don't see the Jays or Red Sox selling either. 81 wins probably gets a wildcard, and with both having a $250M payroll, whatever gains that are made by selling the 15th player on the roster for the 300th best prospect are lost by damaging your chances to salvage a season you spent a quarter of a billion in payroll. Fangraphs gives Boston and Toronto a 20% chance of the playoffs. They're not selling if they have a 20% chance 2 weeks from now. There's just too much expended money to lower their chances for somebody who probably never makes it out of AA. The royals will sell, but all their interesting players are hurt. The Mets will sell, but they don't have anyone that is interesting to sell. The A's will sell, but not anybody under 27 years old, and all but a few of their players are under 27 years old. I see a seller's market.
