Oh man. You're way down on Carson Williams huh! No way I do this. Williams is the only player we have capable of playing shortstop if Walls gets hurt. I think Williams is done as a Ray in the off-season, but I'd need a better return to move him now. Williams has less than half a season to show some improvement though. I need a better return than this to give up on Williams.
It's not that I'm way down on Carson (though i am down), but I had an epiphany a few months ago when the Rays traded for some scrub named Dunn (who is a lefty) and then proceeded to play him over C.Williams even against LHP, before sending both to AAA. It opened my eyes. If a RHB isn't an elite bat first and foremost (e.g., JC and Diaz), he has two futures with the Rays (1) platoon bat, and (2) total bust. Mead couldn't get playing time with the Rays despite being a top 50 prospect. Now he's hitting 131 wRC+ with Washington. Williams has been jerked around since hitting AAA and now looks like he's on the expressway to Bustville. How many prospects like A.Smith came to the Rays hitting well only to become total busts after the Rays sunk their claws into them? It's why I'm totally fine trading A.Smith and C.Williams for pennies, moving D.Pierce before the shine wears off and having no expectation that any other righty in the system will ever develop. I'm being dead serious here. It's why the recent drafting of Marchand (another middle infielder who also bats righty) instead of Dietz (a LHP, which the Rays have none of in the system) pissed me off.
