I can’t agree with the statement Simpson has the lowest ceiling. He is a 4 fWAR player with a league average bat and a bit better base stealing record. His floor is a 2 WAR player and it’s no coincidence that the Rays often struggle when Simpson can’t find a way to get on base. He probably adds .050 to the OBP of the batters that follow him because of how nervous he makes pitchers. I also think he’s a big part of the future with fellow lefties Mesa Jr and Melton in the outfield, along with RHBs DeLuca and Vilade. Mullins and Fraley won’t be Rays next year. I like the idea of adding Wells and Rutsch but I don’t think this trade works for either side.
I'm not a run scored or an RBI guy, but holy yikes. Simpson has 89 games played and has scored 39 runs. And this is our spark, our scoring machine who brings the fear of God to all pitchers with a poor slide step? Over 150 games, that's 64 runs Simpson scores. That's not enough homey. And I disagree that he adds value to players batting because of how nervous he makes pitchers. I counter with "He's like 40 of 60 stolen bases. Pitchers love when he tries to steal, because there's a good chance that it's an out. Players hitting when he's stealing are likely to take a strike to let him steal. Everybody else gets three strikes, but when Simpson's on base, you get two strikes.". He has only driven in 17 runs, because he's not a threat to hit the ball for extra bases and he hits the ball so weakly, the safety squeeze isn't an option because the first baseman and third baseman play 10 ft in front of the bag. That's extrapolated out to 27 RBIs per 150 games, and 64 run scored. That's atrocious, and I hate that he's made me even look at runs an RBIs for the first time in 15 years. But holy crap, a whole season and you've got 27 RBIs and 60 runs scored? Are you a pitcher in the '80s?
You can’t fault him for failing to score when Walls, Williamson and a catcher follow him in the lineup.
They all have fairly acceptable on base percentages, they just don't hit for power. And the slowest guy in the league scores from first when you hit for power.
Also, he's not a league average bat, as he was 12% below average last year, and 18% below average this year. He also isn't a four win player, as he has a career 1.9 war in 800 plate appearance. Come on man, these are counting stats, and you're miscounting. You can say " I believe he's a four win player if he does _______ and ________ way better than he ever has before", but to just say he's a four win player with a two win floor is just poor addition, because he very clearly isn't.
Agreed, he’s not a league average bat right now but if he is at year end he’s probably a 4 WAR player. You misread (or I did a poor job conveying) my message.
