Rays bring in a SP with control and good production and a reliever to help the Pen this year. It’s costly but worth it.
Since the Angels need a catcher, it would be worth considering a deal if Nathan Flewelling or Caden Bodine were included as the centerpiece. Hopkins carries too much risk to serve as the main piece due to his excessively high walk rate. Fundamentally, given that it is a buyer's market, one would have to overpay to acquire a starting pitcher with multiple years of team control.
I get that. The Rays need a catcher too though, and both Flew and Bodine would be on my no-trade list if I ran the Rays. Hopkins is risky but his trade value has been reduced accordingly. If the Angels like him, the risk/reward is there at his current valuation. If the Angels don't like him, then yeah, a deal probably can't be reached for Detmers. Rays could swap in any number of other pitchers, but Hopkins is the true front line starter prospect that I would think the Angels would demand in a Detmers trade. I'm not a believer in this being a Seller's Market or teams needing to overpay. A quarter of the league is definitely selling, and I suspect another 3-5 teams will opt to sell by the Deadline. That's 1/3 the league, and a lot of teams have such iffy prospects this year to make a real run that they'll "buy" but it will be more nibbling at low cost marginable upgrades rather than big time adds like Detmers. I also think the extra years of control will be discounted because of the risk of a lockout. We will see... I know everyone loves to sell the Seller's Market story because it suggests there will be monster trades coming for those who sell/buy, but I'm not expecting Buyers to go crazy.
How serious is the Daniel Pierce injury?
He's out the rest of the year but I've not heard any concerns on his future. In fact, he seems to have gotten more prospect love since he was injured, as his trade value has jumped significantly. Because of that jump, he is very tradeable in my opinion with the Rays having drafted Emerson and Marchand last week.
