I think you know I was Simpson's biggest fan. I had him in my top five prospects when experts didn't have him in the Rays top 20. But his inability to hit the ball past anyone really limits his contributions. Infields play in, outfields play in, so no one scores from second on a base hit, no one goes first to third on a base hit, and because the corners are in, he can't safety squeeze. He can be a complete chaos agent. I love it, it's fun. It's a dinker back to the picture, picture rushes throws it into right field. But more often than not, his successes are a dinker over the second baseman that doesn't allow even a fast runner to go first to third because he has to hold to see if it's caught. I want to see us upgrade positions that we don't have internal replacements, and for left field, we have internal replacements. Therefore, I'm using that surplus to improve 2nd, C, or SP.
Well shit, he sounds worthless. All his hits are singles instead of the Ks and lazy fly balls coming from the rest of the bottom of the order. Look, I get it. We love HRs and hard hit balls to the wall, but Simpson has been very good all season and twice as good as half the roster the past month. I think I’ll keep him.
Simpson had a nice double today. You see the guy on first didn't score though? Because the ball wasn't hit past anybody. And Simpson didn't score either, because a lot of times in this league, you have to drive yourself in, and Chandler isn't ever capable of doing it, and our roster isn't set up with guys that are capable of doing it for him. Most days, our last four batters in the order combine for four home runs on the year. Chandler Simpson can't catch or play shortstop, and so he's the odd man out in my book, because left fielder with power is pretty easy to fill. We probably have an extremely adequate replacement in AAA right now, and that's what I'm betting on every time I make a trade involving Chandler Simpson. I don't want him gone, but we have to get some offense out of our last four batters, and we can't get it hoping for three hits in a row out of them to score one run. All of Simpson, Mesa, and Melton are left handed, and I have been extremely impressed with Mesa. If you need to make a trade to land a starting pitcher or a second baseman or a catcher, I would rather trade Simpson and bring Melton up than trade two top 100s, because that's what I keep estimating Simpson's value at.
I like Mesa, I like Simpson, and I hope Melton is part of the future. I also hope the three of them make up our starting outfield next year. I don't think the Rays get better by trading away their best players, and Simpson is one of the Rays better players this year. I also don't think the Rays need to trade 2 top 100 prospects to land a SP, 2B or even catcher. Not even close (not even 1).
