I think you are underrating how good Soriano is. Incredible groundball rate that the Angels can not take advantage of due to poor defense. Would thrive in Tampa Bay with years of control. Prospect hugging when you want a top trade chip on the market does not work. Angels need to get value back, they need a catcher more than anything. Its either Bodine or Flewelling.
Rays need a catcher too, and since there's no guarantee any prospect works out, I hope the Rays keep both Flew and Bodine. As for Soriano, I'm not good at projecting what a player is going to produce in a different system. All I can do is compare players as they are, and here is how I see Soriano. He has a 4.38 xERA, which is good not great and would rank 4th amongst 2026 Rays starters. He walks more than 10% of batters, which suggests that the fielders behind him are not his biggest problem. Rather it is a lack of control. No Rays SP walks 10% of batters. Actually, almost no Rays pitcher all year (including those who ride the AAA shuttle) has walked 10% of batters. I'm also concerned that his FB velocity has fallen almost a tick each of the past 2 years. So yeah, a team does have to pay to play, but I just don't see the Rays giving up a top 100 prospect for a guy who would slot into their system as a #4 SP (and might not make the post-season rotation). To each their own...
