Yeah, I saw on MLBTR that the Mariners were willing to trade Hancock for immediate righty help at the plate and I got to thinking. I don't want to see the Rays part with members of their ML squad, but the Giants are looking to sell pretty much everyone. Seems like a good trade on paper.

Mariners are said to be shopping Hancock for right handed bats to help their playoff push. Schmitt is the righty utility bat that can be played all over the field, allowing the Mariners to target other players at positions of need. They also get a high upside CF prospect in Overn from the Rays (yes, I know the Mariners have a pretty good CFer already but Overn can play the corners if need be). Rays don't want to trade Overn, but if that's the cost to get 4 years of Hancock, then so be it. The last piece going to the Mariners is a reliever who the Rays are expected to promote to their 40 man this offseason, if they don't call him up sooner for the playoffs. He throws real heat. From the Giants perspective, they trade a rental (Arraez), a player having a career year they are expected to move (Schmitt) and a good-not-great reliever (Winn) for 2 SP prospects and a SS capable middle infielder with a good hit tool. That's a pretty good return. The Rays give up some good prospects, but they improve their ML squad both in the present and the future with this trade. It's not as sexy as trading for Skubal would be, but I'm not expecting Skubal to be traded at this point (the Tigers are entering an easy stretch of their schedule and should narrow/close the gap with several teams ahead of them in the standings).
