Angels are looking for a young catcher. Rays have 2. Why wouldn’t they be willing to part with one for Detmers? I like Flemming and Pierce but Hopkins BB/9 are an issue.
Because the Rays have been looking for a catcher for 30 years. They have 2 good prospects with no guarantee they both work out. Just imagine if the Rays traded one for Detmers only to watch him blow out his elbow and only pitch 10-20 games for the Rays while the catcher they kept busted and the one they traded became a star. Rays know how to develop pitching and they have a good rotation as is. Detmers is a luxury, not a necessity. The Rays catcher prospects are necessities that may turn out to be luxuries.
I understand where you’re coming from. It depends how much the front office believes in this team. Never winning a World Series has to mean something to them. Detmers would give you guys a boost in the post season and he’s under control for 2 more seasons so if Martinez leaves in FA. So at the very least you have McClanahan, Rasmussen, and Detmers next year.
Martinez is definitely leaving in FA, so that is a concern but not a huge one. Rays have Ras, McClanny, Jax, Pepiot, Seymour, T.Johnson, M.Forret, and B.Hopkins for next year's rotation, plus whoever they sign in free agency. Again, I like Detmers, but he's just a very good pitcher, not elite. I wouldn't part with any of the Rays' top 4 prospects for him. I would also hate to part with Flemming and Gray for him, but I would part with one of them (but not both).
