Otto Lopez is having a breakout year at the plate and is having a career year. Is he a 6 fWAR player going forward? No, he probably isn't, but he is a solid bet to be a 2-4 fWAR player as a defense first SS with a league average to slightly above league average bat. I would love to see the Rays improve SS this way. But the cost..., how will the Marlins value him? If they think his breakout is legit, they should hold out for a team's top prospect, even if that prospect is a top 10 overall prospect like Gillen. If they see him as a 2-4 fWAR player going forward, then the return package would be a lot less. This trade package is based around the Marlins needs. Aside from Lopez and Edwards, the Marlins have nothing in the infield. Even their Farm is pretty barren with infielders. So the Rays trade two former 1st rounders in Williams (in need of a change of scenery) and Taylor (looking like a stud) to fill out the Marlins infield, along with high upside SP Hopkins. Hopkins is working on his mechanics and the results haven't been great in 2026, but he still retains TOR upside with elite tools. There is a ton of upside in this trade for Miami, and it's all near ML ready talent.
Love it. I'm buying the breakout. He's hitting the ball a full MPH more on average than he did in 2025 and 2024. He's probably not a true .850 OPS guy, but he's probably at least a ,750 OPS guy going forward, which is a massive improvement over the black hole of Taylor Walls. Walls has a great glove, but so does Christian Pache, and Pache is unwanted even in Japan. You can't have a wRC+ of 70 and start on a playoff team. Lopez has the bat control of a poor Man's Chandler Simpson, as he squares up almost everything he swings at, but he also has the ability to hit it out of the park. If your SS plays good defense, has the skill to win a batting title, and has the power to hit 15-20 HR per year, you have an absolute stud on your hands. I honestly think the Marlins laugh at this offer, but I could be wrong. There's just so few SS capable of doing what Lopez is doing, that the asking price should be crazy high. If he's my starting SS and someone offers 3 failed/failing prospects, I kick em in the shins. I suppose it all depends on if Bendix views Taylor as a future starter, because it's hard to view Williams and Hopkins as such.
