Dajuba... Overall thoughts on how the RedSox did at the deadline?
To answer your question.... I think the RedSox "overpaid slightly by inlcuding Azocar OR Witherspoon for Adley. I think one of those 2 prospects (Doesn't matter which one) should have been 2 mid-level prospects i.e. Henry Godbout, Marcus Phillips, Franklin Primera etc. The one thing that crawls up my butt on the deal is that we should have gotten Taylor Ward in the deal as well for the price we paid. Baltimore got absolutely nothing for him from Seattle (fans are PISSED from what I am reading) I LOVE the move assuming Adley fits in here and wants to be here long term. Clubhouse guy, great manager of a pitching staff, switch hitter w/ OBP skills and some pop. In his prime age-wise (28 I believe) Gotta lock him up long-term to make this deal "worthwhile" I think we overpaid for Erik Miller and the prospect from SF. I think as low as Meyer's value fell, there could have been more in return if we got ahead of that instead of waiting til last minute of the trade deadline. But I do really like the addition of Miller to be our 7th inning guy/lock-down NON-Chapman lefty. Overall I like it. I am a life-long RedSox fan and I am used to them making horrendous trades both ways. We trade the star player.... We get nothing. We acquire the star player, we pay more than anyone else would have. It is what it is. I am just LOVING watching this team play. First time since the "Band of Idiots" w/ Millar and company that I have actually LIKED the team the way I am. Let's see what they can do the rest of the way. Chicago tried killing us no less than 5 times last night and we just wouldn't give up. Yet another character win. SP sucked. Bullpen sucked. Caught stealing 2-3 times to END AN INNING, and we still came out on top.
I think Bloom was fired for being indecisive and Breslow was brought in with that understanding. I have to admit that I didn’t see the stock pile of pitching he had accumulated as being the catalyst to acquiring a bat at the deadline but that seems to of been his plan. I commend and applaud him for his foresight, aggressiveness and his willingness to put his head squarely on the chopping block if it doesn’t work out. I also feel that with a lockout looming over the MLB landscape that 1.3yrs for the right player (Rutschman?) just might represent an opportunity for a savvy front office team and think Breslow may of traded for his identified opportunity. So, as far as Rutschman goes, I think the Red Sox are clearly taking a step back in the short term and now can only hope to hell he returns and is a productive upgrade down the stretch. To me it looks like 6 weeks plus the post season (hopefully, and a long one), then possibly a strike shortened season (plus hopefully another deep post season) and then he gets a QO offer (assuming they are still around) and he’s gone as a free agent and off to a west coast team and home (he grew up in Oregon and went to high school & college there as well). And that could possibly be best case scenario given his injury history. I hope Breslow isn’t intuitively gambling on health and sign ability, after all, the under the hood stuff only applies if he’s playing (and playing for Boston). Breslow has now pushed in a sizable prospect capital chip(s) for the ‘26 & ‘27 season and the window is not only wide open but the glass is busted out as well. Jake Rogers is the guy the Tigers DFAd shortly before trading Skubal (Skubal's BFF and personal catcher). I'm not saying the Red Sox are going to make a serious push for Skubal in the offseason, but that's an under the radar move you'd make if you were going to try to convince Skubal to sign. Then again, Rogers is more likely to get DFA’d in 3 weeks than he is to play a role in signing Skubal. But I’m not against optioning Wong whenever Rutschman comes back, to keep them all in the fold. Depends on performance in the meantime and how well things go with the staff.
