I think Bloom was fired for being indecisive and Breslow was brought in with that understanding. I have to admit that I didn’t see the stock pile of pitching he had accumulated as being the catalyst to acquiring a bat at the deadline but that seems to of been his plan. I commend and applaud him for his foresight, aggressiveness and his willingness to put his head squarely on the chopping block if it doesn’t work out. I also feel that with a lockout looming over the MLB landscape that 1.3yrs for the right player(s) just might represent an opportunity for a savvy front office team and think Breslow may of found his identified opportunity.
It's my understanding that the Brewers offered Pena and Lara and another lower position player for Skubal and Harris turned it down because they wouldn't include an MLB ready SP in any of their packages put forth which the Tigers system is in desperate need of. Not saying it was the right move but it kind of explains why he took the Dodgers offer especially with an OF that is close to MLB ready with some real power and speed and a risky SP that should fit in at #3 at the minimum. Both Pena and Lara have speed but they both lack power even though Pena has an above average power grade (it hasn't shown up yet).
I feel a River Ryan fit as a #3 SP is best case scenario not at the minimum. But that’s me
