This is a trade focused on need. The Diamondbacks received the 29th ranked production (out of 30 teams) from both 1B and DH in 2026. W-O-W!!! Talk about abysmal production. Jonathan Aranda hit 123 wRC+ in 2026 while producing 3.0 fWAR playing mostly 1B for the Rays. He would dramatically improve the D-Backs at one or both positions. And the Rays can afford to trade him with Hicks playing some 1B to keep his bat in the lineup on days he doesn't catch, Vilade capable of playing 1B and having moderate splits, and most of all, top prospects like X.Isaac and T.Morgan in AAA ready for the Show. In return for Aranda, the D-Backs trade Lawlar and Hagaman to the Rays. Lawlar apparently found a home in the D-Backs outfield this year but he was brought up a middle infielder and the Rays have a serious need at both SS and 2B. They also need better RHBs on the team, and Lawlar might be able to provide that if 2026 is any evidence. Lawlar isn't enough for Aranda though, so the D-Backs also have to include Hagaman, a pretty good pitching prospect. Both teams get better from this trade.
I've really wanted Lawler for SS for a really long time but his injury history does worry me cause usually guys don't get healthier when they get to Florida, I'd still take him of course.
At this price point, he's worth the risk. Rays will have Walls back next year regardless.
