Why for Phillies: Move on from Harper and avoid any more “messiness” back and forth between Dombrowski and Bryce. Phillies take on more “2027” money as Garcia ($12M-estimated arbitration ) and McMahon ($16M) combined=$28M, but since Garcia and McMahon are expiring contracts they clear a ton of money long term. Also with Bohm a FA Philly gets a 3B replacement and also Garcia fits in a 1B to replace Harper. Hess has regressed in the Yankees system, but he is a former first round pick. And can add to Phillies farm system. Why for Yankees: Add Bryce Harper. It is a huge risk to add a “volatile” element to the room along with the next 5 years of his contract, but the Yankees have to try something new. Also Harper is a proven postseason performer (. This is a slight downgrade defensively, but a Rice (DH+1B), Harper (RF+ 1B) and Judge (DH + RF) timeshare at all three positions (DH, RF and 1B) helps with wear and tear. I only start Bryce in RF at Yankee stadium since it is a smaller area. He is not equipped to play RF at larger parks (Wild Card series in ATL) proves that.
