Cleveland is 1/2 game behind Minnesota in the AL Central and 1 game behind in the wild card race. Yes, they need to consolidate pieces, but they will want a controllable MLB ready piece.

The only MLB contributor is Quantrill (or Plesac). With SP names tossed around, I thought maybe they have a SP waiting in the wings, is that not the case? Why are Guardian pitchers in the rumor mill so much?

Jones has been the main right fielder for the past several weeks. I can see Cleveland trading Plesac only if another trade for a major league replacement happens. Peyton Battenfield is the only near ready starter. Most of their strongest pitching prospects are at AA or just promoted to AAA.

It goes like this, before the season started, their depth at SP was way better and their needs way different. Before the season started it really looked like they needed an OF bat and looked like they had good SP depth. So trading a Quantrill or Plesac for a bat made a ton of sense... Go to the current time... Cleveland has four starters healthy. Civale is out. #6 starter in Morgan, has become a RP, #7 in Morris is on the 60 day DL. #8 Pilkington is healthy, but hasn't been effective, #9 Myers, got cut, #10 McCarty looks to be a RP... Cleveland also had to protect a million position players, they only have 17 pitchers on the 40 man, 1 on the IL, 2 on the 60 day IL, one of the 16 left is coming back from Tommy John, so they have 15 available pitchers... they just cannot afford to move any of those 15 pitchers right now, unless they trade position players so they can add one of the other pitchers, who don't have a full season of AAA under their Belts. They have a ton of talent, just a yearish away Also Martinez wouldn't be available in this deal, they have to move from their 40 man, not guys not on the 40 man... the deal would have to be completely different for Cleveland to accept. I want O'Hoppe, but Cleveland cannot trade an SP right now...

Thanks for the clarification. It is confusing that Plesac's name is so prevalent in the rumor mill. Is the concern for the Guardians the current 40 man or the future 40 man leading up to the rule 5 draft? That was my thought with Martinez, if he needs to be put on the 40 before the draft they might try to move him or a player in that situation. With the Phillies need for a SP and the desire to revamp the farm, I thought it might be a match at the deadline, but from what you both say, it sounds like this is something that might be more possible in the offseason.

Plesac was rumored last off season to be available and small market teams always listen to about everyone. Plesac has gotten in trouble with the team a couple times. Cleveland kind of has a structured culture and Plesac doesn't fit that all too well. Plus many Cleveland fans wanted another bat, so they were thinking, let's move this guy for a bat. Right now Cleveland has 2 Free Agents and one likely in Shaw. Everyone else is under contract. They have about 6-7 prospects that are Rule 5 that most likely would be taken in the Rule 5 and a few more that could be. They have added 15 prospects this season already... They have to find likely like 4 more spots for 45 FV players and almost all the guys they already added were 45+ FV rated prospects. The farm is loaded at the moment.

Phillies get a rotation arm for the stretch run and the next few years (I like Quatrill more than Plesac) and get some pieces for the future. DD did this last year when he got Crouse in the deal with Gibson. It hasn't worked out but I like the idea behind it. O'Hoppe looks to have a good future but is blocked and the Guardians have a roster crunch. I don't know if Martinez needs to be added to the 40-man for next season or not, if he doesn't then it would be more likely to replace him with a promising guy who does. It frees up a rotation spot (I think that's what they are trying to do with starts names in trade talks) and consolidates two prospects that need to be protected for one better prospect.
