2I feel like Marlins and Giants fans might both hate this, but hear me out. The Giants need starting pitching, and getting Edward Cabrera gives them a super young, controllable, MLB-ready arm that they can mold however they want and that can help them in their playoff push this year. Plus Burdick is an MLB-ready righty CF replacement for Slater with good on-base skills and power. As for the Marlins, Slater gives them 3 years of an elite platoon outfielder that can play CF and cover for Jesus Sanchez against lefties (and probably play most of the time against righties too). This shores up CF for a good while. Cabrera and Burdick are good, but expendable enough to do this deal with the Marlins’ pitching depth.
Slater is the only OF the Giants have against LHP that isn't a serious defensive liability, and Burdick isn't very good. He's hitting 109 wRC+ in AAA in a league he's fairly old for, at least as a prospect. I can see the Giants liking what he offers, but losing Slater would be too much. And Cabrera has serious issues with walking batters, which pretty well goes against the Giants' MO for starting pitchers. Slater is hitting 148 wRC+ vs. LHP and 138 vs. RHP. He's been excellent and costs the Giants very little. I don't see them moving him.
