I figured the Rays wouldn't want to push too many innings/pitches on their young arms this year due to the lack of minor league play last year. Unless they do that, Berríos can provide a lot of quality innings for the next 1.5 years if Tyler ends up needing TJ.
The featured trade of Berrios for Edwards and Goss makes sense. Rays have plenty of 2B players/prospects and the Rays are ridiculously deep with pitching prospects. Losing Goss and Edwards is manageable. Rays won't trade for cash, and adding Cruz may not be something the Rays pursue. I think they should, but it will probably cost them Yandy Diaz's roster spot to do so. Rays will already be parting with Brosseau and KK to add Franco and Brujan. Diaz has no power, but he gets on base about twice per game, which isn't nothing. Anyway, whatever the Rays do will be the conservative move. They aren't prone to desperation or panic moves.
The problem with that featured trade is the Twins have ZERO need for a 2B. They have Polanco on a long term team friendly deal, Arraez as a super utility that mostly plays in the IF, plus Nick Gordon has looked good there for the team in a small sample. What the Twins NEED is a long term answer at SS, pitching, and possibly a Buxton replacement if he gets traded. The Twins think Royce is the answer at SS but he projects to being average at best defensively there so getting a legit defensive SS prospect would be good but 2B prospects literally provide nothing for the team. How do you think the Rays will handle Tyler's rotation spot?
Well, that does complicate things then, doesn't it! Rays have plenty of SS, so if that's the desired return, the Rays and Twins could probably work something out. Perhaps something like Goss, Ryan and Pie. Of course, all this assumes the Rays feel they need to add someone to fill Glas' spot. On that point, I think it's 50-50. The Rays are having a tremendous season and Glas is currently expected back by September. Picking up a pitcher like Berrios (or Cobb, Duffy or Scherzer) makes sense to me (ie: a top 3 pitcher in a solid rotation). Picking up an innings eater who profiles as a back of the rotation pitcher, not so much. The Rays current rotation is solid, if not spectacular - Hill, McClanny, Yarbs, Fleming and Wacha. They could (and should) call up Patino to keep their current opener/tandem starter system working, but it appears they aren't interested in that move yet. Archer is expected back sometime around the ASG, but he could return sooner or later. So they have options. They also have a very deep Pen of pitchers capable of pitching 2 innings (basically a top 3 Pen since May 1st). Glas' injury mostly affects the Rays' post-season chances, which have just taken a huge hit.
