I don't think this works from the A's perspective. They don't need and OF or 1B. Why trade Chapman for a DH (that's where Smith would be)? There's probably a deal that works for both teams somewhere in there, but not with Nimmo being the best player coming back to Oakland.

TheMigs

They do need a DH. With Khris Davis gone, they currently are looking at a DH by committee. Smith can play OF or 1B on occasion if needed also. They add in Piscotty to shed his salary, and by so doing, they give up one of their projected starting OF's. I just don't really like the alternative cases, where people have proposed something like JD Davis and some prospects. JD Davis is a good hitter, but is a poor defender. That's a huge downgrade for the A's, to the point where, over value wise, someone like Jake Lamb might be just as good. As I mentioned, the Mets have some good prospects, but they are mostly in the low minors. A trade like that is a "rebuild" type trade, and what I'm saying is that, if I trade Chapman, I don't want to do that kind of trade.

Sure, Davis is gone, but you’re going to trade a super star for a DH who has about game stretch of hitting well? We don’t even know if Smith is good.

As an A's fan, I wanted to think of a scenario I would accept if a trade of Chapman to the Mets really did happen. Admittedly, I don't think the Mets are the best match, as I doubt a trade like this would be accepted on the Mets side, but this is what it would take. The Mets farm system is decent, but their top guys are mostly at the lower levels of the minors, so I don't really want that. They have a lot of depth of MLB position players. Chapman makes the Mets a force, and even though they'll miss Smith and Nimmos's bats, Smith doesn't have a place to play right now. Adding in Piscotty gives them an MLB outfielder they can play at a corner to replace Nimmo, one who is pretty solid when healthy. The A's give up their best player, but honestly they probably have a better lineup for it. Nimmo and Smith give them the lefty bats with power and OBP ability that they need, and also come with team control. Ginn gives them a solid pitching prospect as a bonus also. They'd need a third baseman now, with Sheldon Neuse also traded, but they brought back Jed Lowrie on a minor league deal, they have super utility man Chad Pinder, and Jake Lamb is still available. He was a great fit there last year. I don't want to trade Chapman, but it's a possibility in the next year or so, and this is the type of trade that could keep them competitive without him.
