5There's only one year left on Familia's deal. Utilizing Smith as a way to dump Familia's deal would be a poor use of an asset.
Gets rid of the Familia contract to give the Mets room to sign a reliever to replace him along with any big splashes in free agency, while still remaining under the luxury tax. Smith gets traded, but as much as he's great offensively as a defensive fit he kinda hampers the team. McMahon plays a great defensive game at 3B & 2B, and with his offensive potential, it could result in the same value as Dominic Smith down the road.

While that is true normally, Smith is an interesting case. Dominic Smith is a great bat but also a not-so-great fit for the Mets. If we look at where he fits positionally, he's a 1B with the ability to play corner OF... Ok at best. He's obviously not getting first base with Pete Alonso there. If the DH stays, he also does not have that fit as the Mets play Robinson Cano there. So his only choice is the corner OF. The Mets should really be re-signing Conforto to fill in one of the spots, so Smith should be a LF. Problem is, JD Davis would be forced to play 3B, where he statistically plays MUCH worse compared to his LF. So although his bat fits, he kinda hinders the Mets defensively. But using an awkward fit to get rid of an expensive contract, even for just a year, is incredibly helpful with the luxury tax in mind. Not to mention, I send Ryan McMahon back who plays a fantastic 3B, or even 2B if they really want McNeil at 3B instead. I didn't actually mean to put Goudeau as the 2nd piece, but a better one would be Tyler Kinley. His statcast numbers say that he should be a much better reliever than his stats show, and if the Mets can reign that in, they have a great bullpen piece. With the Familia contract out? They can improve even further at pitching with the extra money they have.
I’m trading Alonso before Smith. Much rather the superior defensive player at 1b and smith will bat >.50pts higher with as many if not more xbh. On a team that puts so many men on base, that’s I’ll take his offensive pedigree. Sandy drafted him with a very high pick and I don’t see him parting him when he finally breaks out to what everyone was projecting him to be
Trust me, I'm a Mets fan, I'm well aware of the positional challenges. They certainly should consider trading someone like Smith. But with significant holes in the rotation, and a mediocre farm system, wasting a trade asset just to save the $10m or so left on Familia's deal would be foolish when they have legitimate holes to fill. They talked about doing this last year (attaching Smith to Lowrie's contract), and that would've been a disaster, given the year Smith ended up having. It's just not a good strategy. If they trade Smith, it should be for a position of need. And while I get the argument that McMahon would solidify third base for them positionally/defensively, he's a terrible offensive player, and so not a starting-caliber player. And Kinley may be a hidden gem, but thus far he's been mediocre and will be entering his age-30 season; I don't know that he'd be any better than Familia next year.
