This trade would be great for the Red Sox, but I honestly, I don't why the Padres would do it. This trade would be part of other larger deals. The Padres would have to bring up their better prospects, but the Padres are crazy enough to do something like that. (Hosmer+Myers+Machado) Gore+Trammell+Patino. Is Padres GM in hot water? Maybe next year? The Braves are in the same boat? Do they write off this year to the Dodgers with the Dodgers knowledge are going hammered on the luxury tax.

My thought is - with the DH coming to the NL, the Padres can use another RH power threat. They balked at the price of Mookie Betts this last offseason - Martinez may cost somewhere between $20M-$25M annually but I can't see him getting a deal longer than 2-3 years. As a Sox fan, I'd love to see them get rid of Martinez so they could bid on Mookie this offseason and move Verdugo to CF. Wishful thinking...

Glad hear that you are a fellow Red Sox fan. I don't see a Mookie return because I think there may be some bad blood. Some other team will give him a huge stupid contract. Big contracts have too many risks. I think that the Red Sox should get an outfielder to replace JDM and JBJ. Duran and Jimenez deserve a chance to play. Devers or Casas will be their future DH. They need to get inexpensive pitching because buying free agent pitching will limit their future options. Do you think that JDM will opt out of his contract given the poor baseball economy? Next year you would sign JBJ for a six million one year deal?

It's going to be a really interesting offseason because of the pandemic. I do think a team like the White Sox could swoop in and land Mookie on a huge deal. RH power like JDM is hard to find - I'm sure I don't have to remind you of the 2017 Season and what the Sox looked like without it. JDM is due $19M for the next two years if he opts in - with the NL adding the DH, I think he could land a deal over $20M per year. I really like Duran, I think he has the potential to be an Ellsbury type player.

The tricky thing is that, actually, the NL is only adding the DH temporarily this year. The plan is to revert back to normal for the NL next year (no DH). Then, after next year, there will be a new CBA, and the consensus is that the NL will be added back in as part of that agreement for 2022 and thereafter. That means 2021 is looking like a "donut" year for the DH. And because of that, there will be less demand in 2021 for DH's, which means it's more likely that JDM does not opt out. He may do so in 2022, but probably not for 2021.

John, JDM, does not have an option for 2022 in his contract. The owners and the players' union could add it next year regardless of the CBA. The players would like the idea, and it could be a visible goodwill gesture by the owners. The COVID 19 has demonstrated the sides' stupidity, but they can agree that baseball needs to be played for both parties. JDM's salary will drop by four million. Maybe he looking for a longer-term deal because he contract will end he is 34 years old.

Sorry, not quite sure I'm following you. He is signed through 2022, and two different reference sites say he can opt out after each of 2020 and 2021. Here's one: https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/jd-martinez-8690/

John is correct, JDM is signed for the next two seasons but can opt out after this season. For some reason I thought the NL agreed to adopt the DH in 2020 and 2021. Thanks for clarifying!

I was wrong about his option, but the consensus among the Boston media is that he is leaving. Martinez has admitted that he likes to travel. He could get close to 38.7, depending on his production this year. The Red Sox could rework his contract(to lower his AVR with a small raise), or he could get a funky front-loaded contract elsewhere.
