8Essentially it's Arenado for Gorman + Liberatore + about $35m cash thrown in, but the cash is just in the form of Cecil and Fowlers bad contracts. The Rockies could either keep them around like the other money drains they have over the next couple of years (Murphy, Davis, Desmond, McGee and Shaw) or just cut them and eat the cash.
What the Rockies don`t need is more useless payroll what they need most IMO is a young talented catcher which the trade doesn`t address & I don`t think the Cardinals can
The Rockies aren't just one piece away from contending (especially if they trade Arenado) so I don't think it's about filling any particular position at the major league level. They need to go into a deep rebuild and lay the groundwork, their organization sucks.
I don't think they are going to go into a deep rebuild but it will be a rebuild of 2 to 3 years. They have Colton Welker, Tyler Nevin, Josh Fuentes to replace Arenado. they also have major league ready pieces like Ben Bowden (who can go in the bullpen) and Yonathan Daza who can fit in the outfield.
This is a great concept, in my opinion it's imperative that the Rockies get Arenado traded before he shows any chinks in his armor. The surplus value on such a large contract will be fleeting when he gets injured or has a down season. The Rockies need to trade everybody and start losing with purpose.
Makes sense to me. Fowler has a teensy bit of field value, so I could see the Rox playing him for a bit in this scenario.
Yeah and there is a bit of the old "going back where you started" about it I figured. Plus, on the sillier side, Cecil could join Wade Davis, Bryan Shaw and Jake McGee in the most expensive, terrible bullpen of all time
I don't think the Rockies would just cut Fowler or Cecil upon trading for them, they'd want to give themselves a chance to mitigate sunken cost.
