Givens is a real talent, but he’s never quite put it all together. But that also means he can be had for less than other premier relievers. The A’s like to do these types of buy-low, diamond-in-the-rough deals, and I think Givens will respond positively to a change in scenery. From the O’s perspective, they get a young OF prospect with a bit of upside and a pitching prospect who has potential as a sneaky-good rotation arm.

I don’t know, Given’s has career worst numbers in terms of HRs allowed and walks per 9 innings, and overall this is his worst year in the majors (in less than half a season of course). Plus he’s already earning $2.15M, with more to come in his 2nd arb year. I want something better before giving up on Barrera and Dunshee (although both may get crowded out by other prospects soon).
