Brewers must be really confident in Devin Williams (why wouldn’t they be, he’s been amazing).

Looks like the Luxury Tax threshold is still a line the Padres won’t cross. SD shaves $1 MM by swapping Rogers & Lamet for Hader.

  3. John Bitzer

Seems underwhelming for the Brewers. The inclusion of Lamet, who we have as a bit underwater due to injury issues, weakens what otherwise would be a pretty close deal.

This feels like such a steal for the Padres! The Brewers must really value Ruiz and Gasser. Could they possibly flip Rogers in another deal? Having Williams seems like it’d make Rogers expendable but do they trust Williams? Fun stuff!

I think it’s a good trade for Milwaukee also. Rogers will help hold down the fort in Milwaukee bullpen. Lamet is a reclamation project but he could put trade over the top. Gasser will be starter in another season or two. Ruiz iffy. Hader has been leaking oil a little in last month. Maybe it’s a sense….

Knowing how brewers work their magic with pitchers… in two years I see Lamet being the best piece in this deal

This is a real puzzler? In all of baseball this is the best the Brewers could do for Hader? I bet a lot of GM’s are wishing for a do over.

Padres apparently save money this year by getting Brewers to take Lamet and pay Hader next year with Myers off the books. Brewers believe Rogers can make up 80% of Hader’s production for a lesser fraction of the cost and Lamet is, to them, a free lottery ticket. Gasser and Ruiz bridge the gap between Hader and Rogers otherwise.

Right I just would think Brewers would want more prospect value than what they got. Unless Brewers see something in Gasser

Brewers make trades that most immediately respond with “What the hell are they doing” and 2 years later everyone goes, “Oh”

The Twins threw some $ in there when they traded Rogers right before the season. Essentially paying his entire salary for this season. IDK if that follows him to the Brewers. Rogers primary role with the Twins was a set up guy in all his seasons but 1 if I remember correctly. Brewers BP got deeper but took a big step backwards.IMO

    • John Bitzer

Right. That’s why we have Rogers’ salary above as 0.3, and why he has surplus value.

You’re thinking of the other Ruiz, Augustin.

Esteury Ruiz is the prospect going to the Brewers.

In a perfect world I would have liked to see Hader go to an American League club because I think the Padres and Brewers are going to be playoff contenders for the next few years. I think another trade will happen for the Brewers before the deadline and we’ll see what happens. I’ve been reading different blogs on Brewers fans comments regarding this trade. The thumbs up and down for the Brewers are pretty close and that’s the impression I get from Brewer fans at other sources. For me, I’ll take a wait and see approach.

As a long time Brewer fan it would be hard to think up a worse trade for Hader. Rogers is a rental who has been so bad lately they removed him from the closer’s role. Lament is awful. Gasser is years away, if ever. Ruiz is a CF with some promise, but as a whole, the deal is awful for Milwaukee.
