A caller named Matt from Halifax called into The Leadoff Spot on MLB Network Radio to suggest this, so I thought I’d plug it in to see if the values match up. Turns out they do! Seems like a fair deal, and one that makes sense for both teams. Martinez gives the Rays a power bat to mash lefties, which is a weakness in their current lineup; the Cards get a versatile infielder with pop who’s controllable long-term.

This likely looked like a no brainer a month ago, but with the emergence of Tommy Edman and the versatility of Yairo Munoz, I think the Cardinals have that role covered without having to deal J Mart.
