Well no one wanted to pay the Cubs price on Happ and Contreras…

And Cleveland–one game behind in the AL Wild Card standings–sat on their thumbs. Both teams are worse for it, imo. Well, we couldn’t work out a deal between us, for that matter, SC. Maybe we are just microcosms of our ball clubs.

Cleveland did check in on Contreras, but didn’t receive glowing reports about his defense, handling of a pitching staff or clubhouse presence according to Zach Meisel of the Athletic. He also commented that they were not the only team to take that stance. Sounds like the reason that the Cubs are stuck with their rental.

I’ve heard that Contreras is poor at pitch framing but never that he was bad at handling pitchers or a lousy teammate. Has a gun for an arm. Hard to believe Guardians or Rays would not have offered more than Cubs would receive in draft pick compensation for an all-star (assuming Cubs make QA) I’m sure Cubs would have covered salary concerns. Willson hit .125 in July. Probably didn’t help. Something turned people off. Be interesting to see teams’ level of interest once he becomes a free agent. With 20-20 hindsight, he probably should have been shopped prior to start of season. Learning a team’s pitching staff with two months left in the season is hard. But Jed never seems to have a plan that makes sense. I know you guys carry water for the Guardians FA, but you can’t be happy with Cleveland standing pat, clear needs on offense, one game out in Wild Card. Chernoff dropped ball, imo, Contreras notwithstanding.

We aren’t happy, but at the same time the FO said they have a plan and majority of their plans have worked out in the past decade, so we have to give them the benefit of the doubt. I actually was hoping to get Walker from the DBacks…

  4. Bennett Johnson

Just read the Meisal article. Yeah, Walker would have been a good pickup for you guys. You have more reason to have faith in your front office than I do. I don’t know if Tyler Freeman can play first, but he can hit. I’d pull him up and stick him over there. See what happens. Not as high on Jones for some reason. Anyway, good luck to your team. Maybe you will eek out enough victories to beat out the new and improved Twins, but I doubt it.

    • Ty Archy

Well your GM is brand new to running the show so it will take a minute to settle in. At least it seemed like he stuck to his guns. I like who they got for Effross…

Not sure if you mean Hawkins. My guess is Jed is still calling the shots. You have to be flexible. What worked before might not always work again. Hanging onto Contreras too long is a major blunder. I like Wesnecki too, but giving up effective controllable pitching to get pitching should not have been the plan. I’m hoping and praying that the Cubs were right on Cade Horton, another smallish pitcher whom they took in the draft, ahead of names like Parada, Collier and Lee. They must have some of the worst scouts in the business. While teams like the Yanks and Dodgers (and Guardians) who pick after them seemingly find talent hiding in the woodwork, Cubs draft players like Ryan Jensen, Thomas Hatch, Brendon Little, Burl Carroway, Ed Howard, etc. Jed waited way too long to pull the trigger. He should have cobbled a deal with Padres involving Contreras and Happ way before Rizzo even thought of trading Soto. Right now I would give Padres both players and Hoyer, if I could get AJ Heller in return.
