I can tell you right now, Cleveland doesn’t want Winn… His BB per 9 is just horrendous… I get the premise of the deal, buy I think Cleveland can/will get better elsewhere.

    • Big Bat

No you can’t tell me that because you don’t know. What I can tell you is that Winn is incredibly gifted and has seen his H9 and BB9 spike in his first exposure to the PCL. I have confidence that Cleveland’s staff could easily get him right again and have a beast.

Cleveland targets strike throwers and Winn hasn’t shown he is…

Question for you Big Bat. What is Cleveland’s starting rotation for 2023 if you move 40% of the current rotation? Will that rotation have a chance to be competitive as a playoff team? Personally, I don’t move Bieber until our younger pitching is more ready to be MLB ready and competitive. Trading Plesac is fine with me. Finding a 5th starter out of the youngsters is much easier than finding a #1 or #2 starter.

    • Big Bat

No problem answering that JMF. You’re not looking to fill the #1 with a rookie because TMac is becoming that. Yes, there is some risk in dealing your top starter, but you’re also improving the back of the rotation, possibly dramatically. Morris has already shown himself to be more than capable. Battenfield should have already been exposed, but there was no reason with all of the depth. Williams, Bibee and Espino are coming fast and it isn’t impossible that all 3 get ML innings at some point in 23. You have Cantillo and Hankins getting healthy again. You throw Winn and Leiter into that mix and you’re looking at more potential TOR SP than one team needs. Even if the rotation takes a step back you have to look at what is gained in the very near future if not immediately.

What SportsCoach mentioned is BS. Winn has demonstrated that he can throw strikes and he has 4 plus pitches. He struggled this year in his first exposure to the PCL and that’s not uncommon for any pitcher. Sometimes we have to look at context and not just numbers.

Morris hasn’t proven anything yet and Espino hasn’t pitched since April. You move up McKenzie and Quantrill leaving 3 spots to fill. Counting on Civale to stay healthy is also very risky. Yes, there is a lot of potential coming, but expecting enough of it to be ready for the start of 2023 is very risky especially for a team hoping to contend for the playoffs. I am too old to waste another year waiting.

        • Big Bat

The only thing that Morris hasn’t proven is the ability to stay healthy, but his injuries have been minor ones. Unfortunately for you, the Guardians’ staff isn’t changing their timeline in order to accommodate your age and/or your lack of desire to wait.

I’m not even saying that they have to trade Bieber. Maybe they extend him instead or maybe they wait another year to deal him, but that’s more risky than trading him now.

You guys that claim that Espino hasn’t pitched since April crack me up. He has pitched and he continues to pitch. It’s just not in any league or affiliate that you follow. You think the only innings logged are the ones you can reference?

          • J.M. F.

Morris has pitched 15 2/3 innings in MLB. That is not a proven pitcher in any way, shape or form. To say otherwise, is just foolish. You also can’t tell me that after the successes of this season to date, that the Guardians are going to want to take a step back. Pitching in competitive games is worth more than pitching on the sidelines. Espino’s 2022 season has set him back at least a few months.

Waiting a year to trade Bieber may be riskier for the return received but trading him this offseason makes success in 2023 much riskier.

  3. Big Bat

Morris will continue on his current trajectory and most likely get even better as he settles in. When you look at his body of work he’s pretty much a no doubt MOR SP at the very least. All he has to do is stay healthy. Thinking otherwise is what’s just foolish.

If Espino is “set back a few months” that would be fine because Bibee and Williams’ success has accelerated their arrivals. They are both significantly better SP than either Civale or Plesac at this moment.

They may wait a year to trade Bieber. They may trade him at next season’s deadline. They may trade him this offseason. They may extend him. If the latter doesn’t happen then the best thing for this organization going forward is to deal him this offseason.

I told you that McKenzie is ready to take over Bieber’s spot should he be dealt. Last night’s performance and this season as a whole supports that.

  4. J.M. F.

Dealing Bieber this offseason is not the best thing for this organization for 2023. Yes, I am very excited with McKenzie, but I am more excited for Bieber and McKenzie for 2023. Any Bieber trade will weaken their options and chances for 2023. Trading Bieber means we need to count on Civale & Plesac more. It would be better to let Bibee, Williams, and Espino work in with the expectation of replacing the bottom of the rotation rather than the number 2 spot with McKenzie moving up. That is just common sense to me.

Cody Morris has pitched 82 1/3 minor league innings over the last 2 years. Counting on him for starter innings in 2023 is very risky.

    • Big Bat

I’ll be surprised if Civale and Plesac are counted on at all. Plesac is as good as gone and Civale might be dealt as well. If that is the case then I doubt they deal Bieber. If they deal Bieber then it will surprise me if Civale is dealt. Basically I’m saying that I’ll be surprised if 2 of Bieber, Civale and Plesac aren’t dealt this offseason.
