This is a buy-low play on Familia, whose contract is severely underwater. The Mets save $15M and get two lottery tickets. The A’s get a rotation upgrade and a bet on Familia to turn things around and help the bullpen like he did last year, with the added bonus that he’d be with the team two additional years at a total outlay of $15M. If he turns out to be permanently bad, it may have been a reasonable gamble, as Wheeler’s addition will have compensated for it.

While this trade is definitely interesting and does make sense on the surface I don’t feel the Mets should waste a return on Wheeler in order to get rid of Familia. Trading Wheeler is the right play but I think waiting for the Offseason to try and make a deal with Familia is a better route. Gives the team and player the 2nd half to try and figure out what’s wrong and see if they can fix Jeurys. I would hate to kind of throw away Wheeler without the Mets having any other significant trade chips at the deadline
Familia has been awful, would need cash back to make that deal work.
That’s why $10M is included, AND Wheeler. See below for additional comments.
