Rays find a way to do without Glasnow for 2023 but get four young players who help the offense this season and sets them up for their future. Burleson(24) gives them a potential impact bat in the corner OF as well as Yepez (25, with power/good zone command) playing 1st/DH for the coming year with both being at least platoon players to start. Baez is a 19 year old lottery pick with power and speed in the OF. Graceffo (22) is their #4 top prospect and the Cardinals pitcher of the year at AA.

Budman – Is this a trade you want to see the Rays to make? Personally, I don’t think there’s any chance the Rays trade Glasnow before the Deadline, and even then only if the Rays’ season goes much worse than expected. I also don’t love the idea of adding 2 more young position players to an already overflowing group of young position players the Rays need to sort through this year. Maybe this trade nets the Rays 1-2 improvements long term, but it probably just makes the Rays worse in 2023. I give the trade thumbs down today with a possible change to thumbs up in July.

Too many “ifs” for my liking for the Rays this season although I could see a wait until the deadline to move Glasnow. Nothing wrong with having two same age guys in Yepez and Burleson as Aranda and J. Lowe with all still having options to get better at AAA during parts of 2023 and still earn valuable PT in the majors now and potentially, at least, being platoon players (if needed) playing all together in 2024 when the Rays can cut bait with Margot and Ramirez. Graceffo is a needed, getting close to MLB ready arm while Baez starts filling in OF needs in the future. I wouldn’t mind switching him out for Herrera to be the Rays catcher of the future as well.
