Angels: They desperately need to have a very good season, and make the playoffs. Mike Trout isn’t getting any younger and for the best player in baseball to be stuck on a team that doesn’t give him the chance to play in the big spotlight of October is sad. Not only that, But Ohtani is in his contract year and seems to have no intention of resigning with LAA. Bednar gives the Angels the elite closer they haven’t had to anchor a bullpen that really really needs to perform well. he has a couple years of control remaining as well. the only downside is that he has been hurt a little bit the last couple years, but he should be healthy and dominant.
Pirates: Bryan Reynolds gets the headlines, but teams have also been calling about star closer David Bednar. Bednar lost just a tiny bit of shine last year amid back injuries at the end of the year, but can still fetch the Pirates a quality prospect package and the pitching talent and upside they covet. The Pirates in thier rebuilding, 90 loss state, have no need for an elite closer who will not get many chances to close games. Sam Bachman was a 2nd round pick who made it as far as the Angels #1 prospect at one point. He is now #3 due to Logan O’Hoppe and Zach Neto joining the system. Ky Bush is also in the top 5 of Angels prospects, and the lefty has played in a couple Future Stars games on all star weekend. Jose Quijada is an up and coming lefty who had a solid year last year and can be considered for a breakout year in 2023. The lefty is also 26, starting his prime, and has years of control left. This would be a great haul for a reliever
Bachman has been mediocre with poor K rates. If playing in futures games is the best that can be said about Bush that is pretty damning. I agree it might make sense to trade Bednar. But I think the return would have to be better than this.
