On July 30th, the New York Mets will trade Joey Lucchesi, Brett Baty, minor-league shortstop Ronny Mauricio, and minor-league pitcher Robert Dominguez to the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for Randy Arozarena.

Why would either team do this at the Deadline? Who plays 3B for the Mets if they move Baty and Mauricio? Escobar is ok I guess, but I’m sure the Mets want to do better. Where does Canha play if the Mets acquire Aroz? From the Rays’ standpoint, how the heck do they add 2 additional infielders to their already bursting at the seams 40 man collection of infielders?

I could see an Aroz trade before the season starts (because there were rumors the Rays were shopping him) and certainly next offseason when his salary starts to get high for the Rays’ liking, but I don’t think the return will be primarily infielders or that a trade will happen at the Deadline. The Rays aren’t just a development team for the big market teams. They’re trying to win a WS themselves and Aroz will be a big piece of their team this year.
