Turnbull has 2 years remaining on his contract, and the Tigers don’t anticipate to compete in 2023 or 2024. Tigers are lacking any real outfield prospects, and trading for Pereira adds an outfielder that is potentially about a year away from MLB.

Yankees need some more starting rotation depth with Montas likely being out for the year. They have Rodon, Cortes, Severino, and German in the rotation currently. All of these guys have injury or innings concerns for 2023, so adding Turnbull softens the potential loss of one of their starters. Yankees also like trading for guys with more than just 1 year of control.
