The Rays get Oviedo to be their #5 while Glasnow is hurt. They get him while his value is low. His statcast is basically all red.

Oviedo only has 1 option. If the Rays are trading for a young arm to ride the shuttle in 2023, they’ll want someone with a 24 option as well. It’s doubtful he’d make the active roster next year with Baz and Bradley in the mix. Plus, I don’t think the Rays want to give Patino away, but that’s a separate issue.

In addition to his statcast basically being all red in the most important categories, his FIP and xFIP were of a #3 SP. I think he has significantly more value than is being allotted him here, which is why I’m willing to give up more than you think is fair. He’s MLB ready, has an option, has tremendous upside, has low acquisition cost, and has major league success. That’s who I want filling in for Glasnow. We’ll deal with next year’s rotation when we get there.

His FIP and xFIP are based on starting only 1/3 of his games and averaging only 2.5 innings per game last year. You can’t extrapolate those numbers to pitching 150 innings as a starter.

I don’t object to trading for him, but I don’t think SP is something the Rays see a huge need for right now (and, of course, I don’t want to overpay).
