O’s do some addition by subtraction as well as addition by addition. They have two MIF (Westburg and Ortiz) and two OF (McKenna and Stowers, plus Cowser and Haskin raking in AAA) with nothing left to prove in the minors that Santander and Frazier are blocking from playing time. They also add Cobb, the best player in the deal, to improve their rotation in the short term and give the O’s a solid vet who can prevent their young pitchers from being overexposed this year and next.
Seattle is straightforward, giving up a pair of interesting lower level prospects and Trammell, who they won’t miss because he basically doesn’t play for them already, to plug the two giant holes in their roster: DH and 2B
For the Giants, I went with a multiple player package because their farm is really thin. Clase is a 70 grade runner who is legit in CF and is developing more power than expected. 4th outfielder type floor, with a chance to be a solid regular in center. Povich is a 23 year old starter striking out 15/9 in AA whose stuff keeps improving and I think is probably undervalued by btv. Benscombe has no power, but is a plus runner and defender at short and could have elite contact and plate discipline. Easy to project as a light hitting utility infielder, with the potential to be a defense and OBP focused starter at short. Izzi is a 19 year in rookie ball who is already throwing 97. Super high ceiling, but obviously a lot of potential to bust as well. Trammell is a buy low guy, which SF loves, with more potential upside than any of their other reclamation projects.
For Alex Cobb, I’m OK with the O’s giving up Santander, Frazier, Bencosme but not Povich. Povich is probably the O’s best SP prospect now that Rodriguez is starting in the Majors. Would have to make the math work another way.
