Tatis has been a big leagues in 2019 to 2023, but missed all of 2022. Excluding the shortened 2020 season, the Padres have been terrible every year Tatis was around the team, and great the year he wasn’t around the team. If they decide to retool and use his value to help fill other needs, the Rays are happy to take on Tatis.
Is this an offseason trade? Rays can’t win anything this year without Glas and probably Ras returning and pitching dominantly.
Nope. Right now. Rays have the capital to acquire the needed pitching.
Then do a 3 team trade and trade that pitching to the Padres. Rays aren’t going to get a pitcher as good as Glas in any trade they do this year.
Also, where do you see Tatis playing for the Rays? Right now, he’d be a drop off for most positions.
I haven’t really thought who he displaces yet lol. This is a long-term move. It’s acquiring a superstar at 24 years old, who’s locked up for another 12 years. One of the five best players in the game. 2019 3 wins in 80 games, 2020 3 wins in 60 games, 2021 7 wins in 130 games, and thus far 2023 is prorated for an 8 win season over 162 games.
In this scenario, Brandon Lowe and Mead are both gone. All of Tatis, Walls and Paredes are capable of playing 2nd and 3rd. I think I make Tatis my Zobrist 3b/RF, Walls 2b (Don’t get me started on how Walls should be our shortstop and Franco should be our third baseman), and Paredes is in a reserve role.
Lineup vs LHP: 1b Diaz, SS Wander, RF Tatis, LF Randy, DH Harold, 2B Walls, 3b Paredes, C Beth, CF Siri
RHP 1B Diaz, SS Franco, 3B Tatis, LF Randy, RF Lowe, DH Raley, 2B Walls, C Beth, CF Siri.
I fully recognize JLowe should be in a full time role, but here he just mashes righties. If he continues, figure out in off season how to get him 600 played appearances.
We’ll need 2 SP and a reliever soon. This trade does not preclude Giolito/Ashcraft/Cobb etc from joining. I think Tatis is a future hall of famer, and if you can get a 24-year-old future Hall of Famer without really disturbing current or future plans, do it and figure out where the pieces fit later.
But after I’ve typed this all out, I do want to tweak the trade a little bit. I’ll try a three-way per your suggestion.
I noticed the other day that Glasnow’s $25MM salary next year is almost equal to the 2025 pay raises going to Franco, B.Lowe, Y.Diaz, Springs, and Margot. Makes me think the RFO fully intend on keeping Glasnow next year and keeping payroll pretty static at next year’s level for a few more years.
