Barlow can’t replace Biggio on the 26 man. There needs to be 13 position players and 13 pitchers. You’re going to have to boot off one of the relievers. When Ryu, Green, and White come off the IL you’re going to have to take off another 3 pitchers because they don’t have options. Pitchers that have options on the 26 are Manoah, Romano, Swanson, Mayza, and Hatch. The others would have to be exposed to the waiver wire and possibly lost. I’ll give you Hatch for Barlow. Who are the other 3 not on the 26?
Jays are going to have to make some tough choices. Could see a DFA for Bass, etc. Or they roll with what they have, I just don’t know if that will get them far enough.
And the calculus has changed with todays roster moves. Hatch is down, Cimber is back on the active roster. He has options though. White has been moved to the 60.
Here’s another thing to consider, the Jays are about 1.5M away from going into the next tier of luxury tax. Barlow makes 5.3M this year, about 2M owed at the trade deadline.
In essence, you would be losing Biggio (who’s value is actually in the negatives because the values were calculated in the preseason), Zulu, and Bass to acquire Barlow.
Tough choices will have to be made indeed.
What does the 26 and 40 man rosters for pitchers look like when Ryu, Green, White, Pop, and Cimber come off the IL?
This trade shouldn’t matter much for that. Biggio and Zulueta are both on 40-man, with Biggio on 26-man.
Barlow would replace Biggio on both, and Zulueta leaving opens a 40-man roster spot.
