That’s a hell of a lot for just one year of control for the Padres. Urias is 2B of the future, they traded Reyes to make room for Renfroe, etc. They can get A LOT more for these players separately.

The Red Sox also don’t want to take on another bad contract in Myers.

Padres would definitely trade lesser prospects for Betts, but they won’t get more than a .500 season out of this.

A trade in the off season like the one I’m proposing here would be contingent on the Padres getting say 48 hours to see if Betts will sign an extension or not. Obviously, none of us know how the talks between Betts’ folks and the Red Sox have gone. Not sure what Betts is actually looking for. IF he would sign an extension with the Padres, would go a long ways for making this happen. Another thing I’m not 100% sure about is the AAV of a contract like Wil Myer’s is because it’s back loaded. When it was signed, it was 6 years at 83 million (AAV was just under $14 million). In this scenario, does that still apply or does it turn into 3 years at 67.5 million (AAV $22.5 million)? If it is the $14 million AAV, it wouldn’t be that bad for the Red Sox.

The problem is that Betts has made it explicitly clear that he wants to test free agency, which is the main reason why the Red Sox are shopping him in the first place. Under any other circumstance in which Betts would OK signing an extension, this trade makes sense (i would hate to see this as a Giants fan)

and you are right, boston can definitely take the Myers deal on

The Sox could easily afford Myers if they deal Betts. But I do have my doubts they could walk away with $128mill in surplus value on top of that. Of course, if SD was very desperate to unload that deal, attaching, say, Urias and Patino with Myers is a good way to get it done. I just doubt SD is that desperate. The bigger factor with these two teams is the last time they made a trade, the Red Sox learned AJ Preller is far from honest as he used false medical reports and didn’t disclose injuries to Drew Pomeranz. The Sox might be hesitant to deal with him again.
