Rays will likely be shopping Randy this offseason. Would the Pirates be interested in adding a sure bet 125 wRC+ or better bat to their lineup for the next 3 years? Yeah, they probably would, but it would cost them one of their catchers (and probably Davis given the Rays’ preference for defense at the position). In this trade, the Pirates give up their top catcher, 2 young relievers, and a pretty good pitching prospect who is still a year away. For a young team knocking on the door, this may be a price worth paying to get over the hump, but I suspect they won’t have any interest in parting with Davis. If that’s the case, then I don’t see a good match for Randy.
