  1. Cleveland already has two DH type outfielders in Franmil Reyes and Domingo Santana. They do not need another one in Jesse Winker. Also, as an Indian fan, I have no interest in Tyler Mahle who has had no success in the majors and is overvalued on this site in my opinion.

    • John Bitzer

You raise a good point about Mahle. Personally, I struggle with him as well. However, every single projection system loves him, and thinks he has a lot more upside to come — for example, ZiPS projects him for 2.2 WAR in 2020, followed by 2.5 in 2021 and 2.4 in 2022. We don’t think it’s wise to override the experts and the objective model with our subjective opinions, so we’re going with the numbers here.

      • I realize how and why you arrived at the numbers that you use and that is very understandable. Cleveland stuck with Carlos Carrasco after two bad years because they knew he had talent and didn’t want to give up on it. A move to the bullpen helped him find achieve his success. But for every Carrasco, there are many others who never reach their potential. In my mind, Mahle is no more than a lotto pick at this time. Thanks, John, for understanding my struggles with Mahle’s value.

Perhaps Cleveland, with their success with starting pitching can unlock it, but you do not trade Lindor, or a player of great value with Mahle as a main piece. A rebuilding team may be able to take the risk, but not the Indians.
