Why would Toronto take on Syndergaard and two years of his contract for at most 1/2 of a season? I would think that the Mets are stuck with Syndergaard at this time.

The Jays would have Noah for half a year and after 2021 make him a qualifying offer. If he rejects it, the Jays would get a draft pick which could be more valuable than the prospects they gave up in this deal.

That’s right, but I should add that the draft pick is already baked into Syndergaard’s value here. Note also that his value will go up a bit in time, because at the moment anyone trading for him would have to eat the 2020 salary and half of his 2021 salary with zero production. So I suspect any team that wants to trade for him would wait until next July in order to get the benefit of the productivity without the burden of the downtime.
