    Messy.

A’s could be gearing up for a strong playoff push and need pitching.

D’Backs are ready to contend and need ML-ready pitching. The top of their farm is stocked with bats.

Detroit is not yet ready to contend and needs high-upside bats with 1-3 year ETAs. Has controllable pitching to offer in trade.

A’s get controllable LH starting pitching in Boyd, in exchange for a bushel of prospects headlined by SS Logan Davidson and reclamation candidate Franklin Barreto. Armenteros has some Luis Robert in him but is in need of a swing path change to unlock power/speed upside. Toolsy OF Buelvas also included. Jordan Zimmermann is nearing a return on an expiring deal and could provide the A’s with bullpen depth in a playoff run. OAK retains blue-chippers Puk, Puason, Murphy, Luzardo.

D’Backs trade from a position of strength and swap a high-upside OF prospect for a high-upside LHSP prospect in Skubal who carries #2 upside. Skubal has seen ML action this year and could join the AZ staff immediately. AZ also sends toolsy SS Blaze Alexander. AZ still has plenty of OF talent down on the farm in blue-chippers Carroll, Thomas and Varsho, with Patino rapidly ascending.

Detroit trades from a position of strength and cashes in two controllable rotation pieces for high-upside bats. Ideally one of Davidson or Alexander hits enough to become a longterm solution at SS, and Kristian Robinson adds a much needed blue-chip bat to a pitching-heavy system. Barreto has all the tools but could benefit from a change of scenery. Buelvas and Armenteros are lottery tickets.

“A’s could be gearing up for a strong playoff push and need pitching.”

Not really. Back end of the rotation could be firmer, but there’s Kaprielian, Holmes, Jefferies and more than a few ‘taxi’ relief arms waiting in San Jose.

“A’s get controllable LH starting pitching in Boyd”

A’s have controllable LH starting pitching in Luzardo, Puk, & Manaea. Boyd, on the other hand, has not been good this year (8.48 ERA, 5.84 FIP, declining ground ball rate).

“Zimmermann is nearing a return on an expiring deal and could provide the A’s with bullpen depth in a playoff run.”

A’s have one of the top 2-3 bullpens in MLB. Zimmerman’s an aging starter with forearm issues who’s been demoted to the bullpen.
