Per MLBTR, the Rays could be in a cost-cutting mode and this trade would save them about $66 million over the next 3 years. For the Red Sox, it makes the Mookie Betts trade look a lot better and fills two very key holes. (Betts and Price for Verdugo and Snell?)

But would Tampa deal Snell to a division rival? That’s obviously a big obstacle that makes this deal a lot less likely.

Rays fan here. I can’t see the Rays trading KK or Snell to anyone in the division. Additionally, while that trade has comparable value according to the trade values assigned here, there is absolutely no way the Rays could sell that trade to their fans. The face of the franchise for the past 5 years and arguably the best pitcher on the staff for essentially 1 prospect with any hope of suiting up for the Rays (and a prospect who plays the position where the Rays are deepest). Not gonna happen in my opinion.

One more thing, KK put up 1.3 fWAR last year. I struggle to understand how his trade value is -9.7.

I do think if the Rays move Snell, they are no opportunistic about moving Kiermaier in the same deal. I think Kiermaier’s value is largely dominated by his contract, which pays him $25.6 million over the next 2 seasons.
