This is a strange trade, maybe a bit mad, but hear me out. This is a trade that makes sense if the Cardinals are looking to dump some salary due to the pandemic and the Angels are willing to punt away 2021. Essentially the Angels get stronger in the long run, while the Cardinals gain a bit of depth in the outfield and 2B. They also get free of Dexter Fowler a year early!
In exchange for this salary relief, however, the Cardinals give up Liberatore, which helps the Angels stock up on pitching for the future. The Angels also get Oviedo to balance things out and provide some pitching in 2021 while he tweaks his game.
Admittedly, this almost certainly doesn’t happen. The Cardinals would likely prefer to wait out Fowler’s remaining year, while the Angels would rather compete immediately. But if the Angels were set on playing the long view, this might be a good move.
